Workplace safety transformation in the poultry, egg industry

As we progress in 2025, workplace safety in the poultry and egg industry is transforming at an unprecedented pace. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), a growing emphasis on mental health, sustainability and the development of inclusive safety cultures are shaping how organizations protect their employees. The goal of the industry is not simply to prevent accidents, but to create a resilient, responsive and safety-minded workforce that owns not only their personal safety, but the safety of all workers.

2025 National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry

A recent example of this ongoing transformation was the 2025 National Safety Conference for the Poultry Industry. More than 300 safety professionals attended and were presented with solutions for a range of emerging issues.

The three-day event included speaker presentations, discussions and small group breakout sessions, all of which provided opportunities for attendees to get answers to their questions. Suggestions for short-term, medium-term and long-term improvements to safety culture were provided, along with accessible strategies that can be implemented immediately.

The conference also recognized the outstanding achievements of 222 member facilities of the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY), National Chicken Council (NCC) and National Turkey Federation (NTF), with the announcement of the 2025 Safety Award winners.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) shared information on OSHA’s priorities, including enforcement efforts, inspection data and whistleblower protections. OSHA emphasized it is working to meet employers “where they are” through on-site consultations, recognition programs and updated rules in progress on issues such as heat, fall prevention and hazardous machinery.

Safety professionals were encouraged to shift their focus from relying solely on lagging indicators, such as injury rates, to building capacity through risk evaluation, hazard controls, continuous improvement and fostering a strong safety culture. Panelist discussions focused on career development and the importance of mentorship programs, as well as addressing leadership collaboration with safety and operations in medical management and crisis intervention.

Attendees gained an understanding that AI is no longer a futuristic concept in safety management; it’s here and evolving. In 2025, AI will increasingly be used to detect hazards before they cause harm, analyze workplace behavior and predict potential risks using data-driven insights.

Workplace safety has expanded beyond physical risks. Psychological safety and mental health support are being recognized as equally critical. Supporting mental wellness boosts productivity and fosters a more connected work culture.

Sustainability and safety are now intertwined. Companies are auditing their chemical usage, energy consumption and waste management practices to ensure they are protecting workers and the environment. Businesses are making choices that support the long-term health and well-being of their employees and the environment.
